Food Ideas!

I thought I would contribute to the blog by sharing some awesome food ideas that I have been using:
1) Spaghetti Squash-
These are great! They come in all different sizes and are oval shaped and yellow. I just cut them in quarters and roast them in a pyrex with water for about 50 minutes. Then, flake out the insides once they have cooled down. It looks just like spaghetti! With some healthy sauce (whatever you like with some protein and veggies) and a sprinkle of parmasean cheese it really tastes great. 1 cup of squash is less than 50 calories.
2) Kale-
It is a really intimidating looking vegetable. However, you clean and cut it just like lettuce. I have been adding it to stir frys or even just sauteing it with some olive oil and garlic. It gets really small, but it has tons of vitamins and fibre so really fills you up. 1 cup is less than 50 calories.
3) Smoothies-
I love smoothies. Especially for a good post-workout snack between meals.
1 small banana
1 cup frozen fruit (whatever you like)
1 scoop vanilla protein powder
1 cup soy milk (or whatever milk you like)
Blend all together.

Hope this gives people some ideas. Both the squash and kale are in season right now so you can find them at the farmer's market. Would love to hear from others about their food discoveries!

According to the "Biggest Loser" book I'm reading, it is important for us folks who work nights to eat a small meal within 30 minutes of waking up, especially if we are going to workout before we go to work. Then just shift our meals accordingly.

Eating lots of veggies!!! Feel like I started off a little slowly but really hit the exercise this week and am feeling really motivated right now! I find that it helps to keep the pedometer on all the time and set step goals for each day.

# 1 I am so HUNGRY! All the time. Any suggestions other than to drink more water?

# 2 I am envious of those of you who can climb all 192 stairs at a time. I can climb only 4 flights without getting short of breath. My goal over the next weeks is to increase a little at a time! Perhaps by November I'll be able to get to the top without stopping!

Jenni, Strong work with the stairs last night, I hope you are walking ok by the morning, Ha, Ha

stairs by transplant

Hello Everyone.  Some of you may not be aware of the 192 steps you can climb to get some exercise on your break.  If you go down to level one  and walk towards the transplant clinic the stairs are right there.  It is pretty refreshing but I'm not going to lie the first few times you do it, you can barely sit down the next day.  But as they say "no pain, no gain".  I have placed a blank piece of paper on the wall at the top of the 192 stairs so if any of you are interested in keeping track of how many times you do it, just sign your name.  It will be a fun way of getting exercise and we can all see each other's dedication to getting healthier and getting in shape.
It's not about winning a contest, but about winning a healthier life

A New Start

I'm excited about this contest! The biggest (no pun intented) excitement is the accountability part. If I am trying to lose weight on my own, it's easy to slip back into old habits and lose my way, not my weight. I think that just being accountable to someone else makes a huge difference!
